Altitude Sickness: What to know

Whether you're planning a high-altitude adventure or simply curious about the effects of elevation on the body, understanding altitude sickness is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Is it the Altitude?

What is Altitude Sickness?

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a condition that can occur when ascending to high altitudes too quickly. It is caused by the body's inability to adapt to the decreased oxygen levels at higher elevations. Altitude sickness typically occurs at elevations above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters), but symptoms can manifest at lower elevations in some individuals.

Common Symptoms

The symptoms of altitude sickness can vary in severity and may include:

  1. Headaches
  2. Nausea or vomiting
  3. Fatigue or weakness
  4. Dizziness or lightheadedness
  5. Shortness of breath
  6. Loss of appetite
  7. Difficulty sleeping

*Fever is not a symptom of altitude sickness and should be further evaluated by a healthcare professional.

In severe cases, altitude sickness can progress to more serious conditions such as high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), which require immediate medical attention.

Risk Factors

Certain factors increase the risk of developing altitude sickness, including:

  1. Rapid ascent: Ascending to high altitudes too quickly without allowing time for acclimatization increases the risk of altitude sickness.
  2. Individual susceptibility: Some individuals are more prone to altitude sickness than others, regardless of their level of fitness or prior experience at high altitudes.
  3. Altitude of residence: Individuals who live at low altitudes may be more susceptible to altitude sickness when traveling to higher elevations.
  4. Previous history: If you have experienced altitude sickness before, you are more likely to develop it again on future trips to high altitudes.

Prevention and Treatment

Prevention of altitude sickness involves gradual ascent and adequate hydration. Additionally, medications such as acetazolamide (Diamox) can be effective in preventing altitude sickness when started before ascent. Dexamethasone is another medication that can be utilized as a form of treatment for altitude sickness after arrival at high altitude, along with other supportive measures such as oxygen therapy and rest.

When to Seek Medical Evaluation

It's essential to recognize the signs of altitude sickness and seek medical evaluation if you experience severe symptoms or if symptoms worsen despite rest and hydration. Additionally, individuals with symptoms of HAPE or HACE, including severe shortness of breath, confusion, or loss of consciousness, require emergent medical evaluation and treatment.

Altitude sickness is a common concern for travelers to high-altitude destinations, but with proper knowledge and preparation, it can be effectively managed and prevented. By understanding the symptoms, risk factors, and preventive measures associated with altitude sickness, you can enjoy your high-altitude adventures safely and confidently.
